Redemption with Jayden: I See Your Matthew and Raise You a Herdsmen
Jayden shares his championship winning game in the most recently completed Lackey Grand Prix!
The results of Lackey Grand Prix #3 are in and LGP #4 is underway, but not everyone was able to watch the final game live on Discord with Jay’s commentary so we’ve got it here for y’all as well. After playing Matt in the Semifinals and thinking about the impact that first-turn Matthew has on the game, I decided to do a little hunting for a good answer because if I know one thing about Rob Smith, it’s that whatever deck he ran in the final game was going to have Matthew in it. The Herdsmen of Gerar feels like a bit of a secret weapon against Matthew so that’s what I decided I wanted to try going into the game with Rob and also the Iowa State tournament I attended a few days before Rob and I played. I worked it into a Philistine defense to maximize my odds of having it turn one and paired that with Infinidab on offense. As expected, Rob ran a disciples variant that sought an early Matthew, but he put a bit of a twist on it by planning on The Cross as an out-of-nowhere win condition so it was a little bit of a secret turtle. Hopefully y’all aren’t getting too sick of Amminadab, I’m sure we’ll be switching things up in the next LGP, but for now enjoy the game!

Jayden started playing Redemption around 2004 when his brothers taught him to play and he attended his first National Tournament in 2005. Since then, he has become a competitive (mostly Type 2) player with a few National titles and, more importantly, has acquired many great friends and mentors through the game. However, in the years leading up to 2020, there has been a downward trend in attendance at some of the big tournaments, Nationals included. As a result, Jayden wanted to start doing something that would help pique and maintain interest in Redemption and he decided to do so in the form of a YouTube channel called Redemption with Jayden, which he started in June 2020 shortly after graduating college. He loves being able to share decks, games, and strategies, and hopes that the channel can be a useful resource for players at every level of the game.
