This devotion using The Redemption Bible focuses on Mary, the “mother” of Jesus (humanly speaking – in actuality he preexisted her as he is God!). Mary was a sinful human being like all people (Romans 3:23), but she also was very Christ-like at times. Let’s see how!

About 2000 years ago Mary, a virgin Israelite pledged to be married to Joseph the Carpenter, was in the town of Nazareth when she was visited by the angel Gabriel who was sent with the Angelic News of the Messiah’s Birth Foretold. Mary would become pregnant with the Son of God by a miracle of The Holy Spirit.

What was her response to this life-altering news? Very Christ-like, actually! The Submissiveness of Mary is seen in her response in Luke 1:38 – “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.”

This response is truly amazing when we realize the dynamics of this event to Mary’s life. She was pledged to be married, so her becoming pregnant at that time would jeopardize not only her marriage but her very life (what man would believe her that she became pregnant by a miracle instead of by adultery?), as the penalty for adultery was death by stoning. But instead of being bitter, angry, or fearful, Mary trusted the Lord. She praised God with a song referred to as the Magnificat in Luke 1:46-47.

Meanwhile, Mary’s relative Elisabeth had also been visited by an angel who told her that she and her husband Zecharias, Father of John would give birth to John the Baptist: a great prophet who would, in the spirit and power of Elijah, prepare people for Jesus’ coming.

Also very Christ-like is the Sorrow of Mary. When Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to Herod’s Temple to be dedicated, a man named Simeon spoke what is referred to as the Nunc Dimittis: a praise to God that also informed Mary that she would sadly experience a Pierced Heart due to Jesus. This was a foreshadowing to the terrible torture and death of Jesus that she would witness.

Though this would be terrible suffering for Mary, it was also a special insight into God’s heart that she would receive: to be able to relate to God the Father’s pierced heart over Jesus’ death as well as the amazing depth of God’s love for the lost and dying world to which He came to offer Redemption. It is truly amazing that God would willingly suffer such terrible pain to save sinful people.
