In the time of the Judges, there were many enemies that oppressed God’s people.
When Sisera was the commander of Canaan’s army, God raised up Deborah to be Israel’s deliverer. Not only did Deborah become Israel’s first female Judge, but a prophetess who shared the very words of God with the people. Let’s take a look at the unusual story that God would weave through this incredible woman.
She sent for Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, “The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you: ‘Go, take with you ten thousand men of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead them up to Mount Tabor. I will lead Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his troops to the Kishon River and give him into your hands.’” Barak said to her, “If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go.” (Judges 4:6-7)
Barak was afraid to face Sisera in battle. If you take a look at the Sisera redemption card, you might see why! Imagine an army of red Heroes blocked by Sisera. If he fought back with the Wrath of Satan they would all be destroyed and nothing could be done to stop it. Even Moses could not have stopped the evil of Sisera!
Although Deborah did agree to go with Barak, he would not receive the honor of victory. God would open Israel’s eyes to the source of their victories yet again. Deborah prophesied that the Lord would bring Sisera to justice at the hands of a woman that day.
At Deborah’s directive, Barak advanced against the great army of Canaan…
At Barak’s advance, the Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and army by the sword, and Sisera got down from his chariot and fled on foot (Judges 4:15)
There was a woman nearby the battle named Jael. When Sisera ran to hide, Jael saw an opportunity. She invited him into her tent, covered him up with a nice blanket, and offered him a nice warm canteen of milk. Nighty night Sisera! When this evil canaanite fell asleep, Jael reached for a tent stake and a hammer. Jael did not approve of Canaan’s oppression, and that night Sisera got the ‘point’ (man, she ‘nailed’ that pun). And there was nothing he could do to stop it.
Just then Barak came by in pursuit of Sisera, and Jael went out to meet him. “Come,” she said, “I will show you the man you’re looking for.” So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera with the tent peg through his temple—dead. (Judges 4:22)
Application: When you trust God, He will give you victory over whatever may stand against. Open your eyes to see the victories that wait before you.
