Recently we had the Type Two Only in Minnesota ending its seven year hiatus. We had fourteen attendees with twelve of them playing Type Two. Props to Bill Voigt for being willing to Judge and for winning Type One Iron Man!

The only other time I have played Type Two was almost a year ago and only casual games with my brother and two games at North Central Regionals, so I was essentially starting from scratch with the deck building. I don’t have enough cards to make a perfect deck but looking through my collection I noticed that I had a large number of Joshua cards, and a pretty large selection of black cards, so I chose to use those themes for my deck. The offense is a Type One Joshua offense with some of the best cards doubled or even tripled up. The black defense was a wide selection of black evil characters from the Greeks, Canaanites, and Philistines themes. The defense had almost all of the evil add to battle doms in the game with Murderous Command, Warrior Overtaken, and Perplexing Vision. The evil enhancements were a smattering of the best black evil enhancement with three copies of Mask of Self Glorification to help with speed. Overall the deck is a homebrewed Joshua Black deck that’s trying to race out with the Joshua offence and win the game quickly if possible while keeping hand pressure on the defense as much as possible.
Round 1
In round 1 I was paired up with Mitch Stewart who was playing a Mono-Green offense with a Babylonian defense. I believe I went first, but on my first attack I got a Captain, Joshua, and Bearers of the Ark band backed up with a pre-attack teaching in parables where I eliminated his only evil character. After getting some pretty easy blocks with my defense and keeping the hand pressure on with Promised Land the game ended in a quick 7-1.
Round 2
Next I was paired up with Martin Miller who was playing a Daniel Greeks deck, the game went similar to my game with Mitch, a fast start and keeping hand control on for a 7-0 win. He never got his offense set up because of my defense knocking out Michael in territory and keeping Abomination of Desolation and Priest of Zeus as draw counters to stop him from getting back in the game.
Round 3
Going into round 3 Jayden and I were the only players with two full wins so we played each other at the top table (which can be watched at this video on Jayden's youtube channel). He was playing lightning Priest-E’s and Edomites, so a much more tuned deck compared to my homebrewed Joshua. I went first and used a teaching in parables to reserve the only evil character he had from his hand. I attacked with the Trumpeting Priests, drew two and assumed I would get a free rescue. But Jayden played the Second Coming to grab Crowd’s Choice to grab the Terrified Chiefs. He then blocked me with the Terrified Chiefs to negate all my stuff. He then played Avoiding Edom to banish my heroes and the Stone Carriers in my territory. I didn’t have an Amazing Faith to negate that so he was able to block me. On his first turn he played Teaching in Parables to reserve an evil enhancement as I had no evil characters. He then chained four Captive Priests into my land of bondage, and then added Eli the Priest (Promo) to grab the Book of the Covenant from his deck. On my turn I had no heroes so I passed the turn with no attack. On his turn he played Book of the Covenant which grabbed Covenant with Abraham from reserve to get the Rebuking Emissary. He attacked with the Rebuking Emissary and released the Captive Priests to band to them and grab Jaddua, Ezra, Jeshua, and Zechariah. I attempted to block with Philistine Commanders but he had an Angel of the Lord and stopped me from doing anything. From then on the game was firmly in his grip, on the following turns he repeated the process while I was stuck pushing lone heroes or small bands into battle hoping to get some cards to get back into the game. This didn't happen and Jayden proceeded to smoke me 7-0.
Round 4
Going into round four I was definitely feeling down about my chances to get top three as I would have to win both of my last two games to get top three. In this round I was paired up with my brother Nehemiah who was playing a Joshua Herod’s deck he was borrowing from Nathan Voigt. I don't remember too much about this game other than getting a strong start with hand control helping my offense speed through, with Confusion of Mind and Forsaken lost soul keeping his offense at bay. The game was over quickly 7-0.
Round 5
In the final round I was paired up with Justin who was playing a Green, White, and Gold splash offense with a Lions and brown defense. I had heard about his lions before the game so I knew that I would have to stop him from playing an early Pride of Lions at all costs. He went first, activated Unknown Nation and passed the turn. I assumed he would be able to use that to get Ahasuerus the Father to play Pride of Lions. So I played a couple heroes and a Priest of Zeus and passed the turn right back. On Justin’s turn I believe he played a couple cards and passed the turn. On my turn I had the ability to get to Joshua’s Sword to discard his Unknown Nation, in addition to a Teaching in Parables to get rid of one of his evil cards. I attacked with Joshua and his sword to discard his Unknown Nation, off of the draw one on the sword I drew Stone Carriers which I banded to. Justin blocked with a lion that negated my sword, then my stone carriers exchanged to Captain of the Host to get a draw three and I played Angel of the Lord to get the rescue. After many back and forth attacks and blocks I was up 4-1 attacking on the last turn of the game. I hadn’t played my Son of God or Second Coming yet so I had the opportunity to get a full win. I didn’t have a copy of Amazing Faith in hand to stop his lions so I was banking on a timeout win which I knew would put me into the top three. I attacked with a large band to try to draw a bunch, ending with Bearers of the Ark to negate Justin’s lacking prophecy which was restricting my dominance. Going into battle I already had the Second Coming so I was guaranteed a timeout win, but I was trying to draw my Son of God to get a better differential. I was not able to draw Son of God so after he blocked I played the Second Coming to grab Son of God, little did I know it was the top card of the deck! I then played Son of God and my own Grapes of Wrath to secure the timeout win, which in turn got me second place in the tournament.
What have I learned?
Before the type two only I had only played three or four type two games so I had very little experience. Jayden gave me some advice at the beginning of the day to know that I didn’t need to play as aggressive as I would do in type one, as both players have a lot more defensive resources. This advice definitely helped in my game against Justin as if I hadn’t been given this advice I would’ve attacked turn one right into his Pride of Lions without thinking, immediately swinging the game into his favor. Gold is also really good in type two due to the high power level of Teaching Parables and Amazing Faith so make sure to watch out for that. Before the tournament I expected my defense to do very badly due to how splashy the defense looked on paper but it actually did very well. All in all this was a great experience and I definitely plan to be playing type two in the future.
