Excited for the upcoming new Redemption set: The Gospel of Christ (GoC)? Well check out this sneak peek at the White and Orange brigades in GoC. This is the sixth and final article in this series giving an introduction to this upcoming set.
Spoilers ahead! Would you like to hear about the amazing new Heroes in white and the big baddies in orange? Then you’ve come to the right place! If you’d rather have your first impression be coupled with the smell of fresh cardboard as you hold the new cards in your hands, turn back now!
Friends and Family:
Besides the twelve disciples there were a number of other people who were close to Jesus during his time on earth. Some were friends, some were family, but all of them experienced His transforming power!
N.T. white has a great mini-theme of female Heroes, but not all N.T. female Heroes were white and not all white N.T. Heroes were female. When assessing how to theme white Gospel Heroes in GoC we decided that grouping those closest to Jesus (who aren’t one of the 12 disciples) was a good fit. That means that there are still plenty of females in white like the “garden girls” but we will also find that there are men such as “Joseph, the Betrothed” (Jesus’ earthly father) and “Zechariah, the Silent” (who brings a little teal to GoC) who serve a purpose in white’s nativity theme as well.
Speaking of the nativity theme, you can’t really tell that story without including “Mary, Holy Virgin”. This version of Mary is so good she needs unity! To supplement her, we have enhancements for “The Annunciation” and the “Magnificat” just to name a couple from her major role in the nativity story.
In addition to the major and minor characters of the nativity story you’ll find some fun support cards for them in the form of the “Bethlehem Stable” fortress, “The Manger” artifact and the crescendo of the star cards, the “Star of Bethlehem” dominant!
GoC white has enough depth to support a second theme focused around the resurrection of Jesus that we’ve called “Empty Tomb”. Many of the “empty tomb” characters have abilities that get better when they are blocked from hand.
They’ve been supplemented with plenty of tools that will make it difficult for opponents to block them in any way except from hand! Whether it’s “Jesus Appears” clearing a path, “Emptying the Tombs” making it hard to block or the “He is Risen” legacy rare removing the bad guys from play, consistently blocking the “empty tomb” Heroes will take some careful planning.
Shuddering Spirits:
There were many times in the Gospels that Jesus encountered evil spirits, often possessing or afflicting people. Over and over we saw this principle from James 2:19 in play “You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.” The evil spirits were in full submission to the Creator of all things – Christ! But that doesn’t mean that they weren’t waging war against His creation.
GoC will see the return of an underused and under-powered theme from the past, placed evil cards. In every instance, the placed orange cards are going to make things difficult for your opponent. Whether it’s “Afflicting Spirit”, a “Two Possessed Token”, “Choked Seed” or one of the many other evil place cards in GoC, it’s going to be pretty difficult for any Hero that is “afflicted” to win a battle.
In addition to all of the new cards that place themselves, orange has a number of cards that gain a powerful bonus based on orange cards being placed. There’s the self-recycling “Sin and Blasphemy” or the massive draw of “Destroying Spirit” to name a few. There are even cards like the massive “Beelzebub” who use the placed orange cards to generate a powerful effect!
One of the two token generation cards we gave to orange is called “The Accumulator”. It gives the option of placing or creating a token every turn! We’ve gotten pretty creative with the variety of ways we’re using to make it worth the investment to place those orange cards!
Of course not every orange card deals with placing. For example the new dual icon version of “Suicidal Swine Stampede” can be used as either an evil enhancement or an animal. All in all I think fans of the orange brigade will be excited about all of the new tools they have to work with in GoC!
That’s A Wrap!
This not only concludes our look at some of the people closest to Jesus and the evil spirits who waged war against His image bearers. It wraps up this series of summaries on how we approached things during the design phase of GoC.
There is still a fair amount of testing taking place. That means that a number of changes are likely to happen to the cards before they’re ready to print. But the general concepts of the set that I’ve shared with you in this series should hold true. Thanks for joining me on this journey! I can’t wait to open some packs from “The Gospel of Christ”!
