Chris’ Play Group Tips, Part 2

Chris F. is back for more play group tips! This time, he shares about his 4 Tier system for giving away cards to new players, as well as “level” and “introduction” decks to progressively train them up!

Where You Been At?

First things first – let’s give a huge round of applause to Scott for keeping things going here on Land of Redemption the past few months! I’m extremely appreciative of his hard work during my extended absence!

Absence? I realize most of you didn’t even know I was gone. Actually I haven’t really gone anywhere but my time investment into this wonderful game of Redemption has been focused on other efforts. So what exactly have I been up to?

More Than Just a Game

Another year of Nationals has come and gone and what a wonderful turn out it was! It’s been a long time since I have joined Gabe on a trip to the National Tournament, let alone play Redemption; with each baby, they slowly ate away at my action plan brain cells and just never gave them back. Good thing they’re so cute, eh? But that doesn’t mean I don’t support it 100% and encourage my husband and kids as they get their gaming geekiness on. I love it. The strategy, math, reading and knowledge of the Bible characters, locations, commands and promises are saturating their minds as they participate in fellowship and fun. What an incredible combination!

Beginnings Of The Twin Cities Playgroup

When my son was 8 years old he found something called Redemption cards at our church bookstore (1). We tried to figure out how to play with the rulebook and had fun but we didn’t quite know how to play correctly. We learned online that the 2002 Nationals was in Rochester, MN so we went because my wife thought she would like to go shopping there. We found the tournament and stayed about 30 minutes. While we were there, we met Chris Bany who invited us to come to Rochester for their regular tournaments and game nights. Chris had a tournament every month and a game night on Fridays the weekends they didn’t hold the tournament (2).

Do You Want to Build a Playgroup?

Do You Want to Build a Snowman Playgroup?

So, you love to play Redemption, but so far only travel long distances to tournaments, or play online with Lackey (when it’s working). Deep in your heart, though, you feel like starting your own playgroup so that you will be dependent on neither. But then fear overtakes you as you are hit with the inevitable question………. How do I start?!?

Hosting a Redemption Play Group

One of the things I’d like to see here at Land of Redemption are resources for play group leaders and aspiring play group leaders. We have some very successful play group pleaders in this game. I’ve reached out to a few of them and some are willing to share insights with us, when their schedule allows. The type of person who hosts a play group is typically someone who gives of themselves. Those type of people usually have a pretty full schedule. In the meantime, I’m going to share a few things I’ve learned as a play group leader, mostly by trial and error.
