Nearly every new set brings with it an anticipation of what new Lost Souls will be introduced. Will they see play? Will they change the game forever? Will they find their way to the bottom of a box somewhere in your closet?
While we as the Elder/Playtest team do not like to do it very often, sometimes it becomes necessary to implement a rule or tweak a rule in the midst of a tournament season because the potential for negative play experience (NPE) is too great. This happened many years ago with the change that limited side battles to one per player per turn. Several other such instances have occurred over the years and we are announcing one today after much deliberation amongst our team and several other experienced players.
If you could make one card, how would you go about selecting which card to create? For an avid card creator like myself, it was not an easy process. Following Nationals, I had a fairly good idea of what I wanted to make. However, there was a slight problem. As it was, the first card I proposed was very similar to a card already on the list. Presented with the option of going forward with mine (and bumping the other off) or creating a different concept, I chose the latter.

“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10) Jesus spoke these powerful words after Zaccheus, the infamous tax collector, showed Repentance and Restitution for all the times he had cheated his fellow people. The goal of Redemption follows the example of Jesus: to save and redeem Lost Souls. Redemption does not portray specific people as Lost Souls because in a sense, we are all Lost Souls before we come to know Jesus. Even when we come to know Jesus, there may be times in our lives when we drift away or feel that we have lost our connection to Him. The amazing truth is that even when we make mistakes, He will never leave us nor forsake us, and that He always welcomes us back with open arms when we return to Him.

In the Disciples set we began a mini-theme of N.T. Lost Soul interaction. You may have noticed this on cards like the “Beggar” Lost Soul, Creeping Deceiver and False Teacher. In The Persecuted Church we continue building on that mini-theme. Today we’re going to take a look at the N.T. Lost Souls that will be inducted into the game in just a few short weeks.
Ranking Lost Souls is a daunting challenge. There are currently 39 different Lost Soul abilities if you count the 2 and 3-liner separately. You might ask, “How can you possibly rank such an array of abilities when they interact so differently in different decks?” The honest answer is that you can’t. Understanding how souls interact with each individualized deck is a crucial part of Redemption and a crucial part of upping your skill level. Sense ranking souls is so particular, I am going to create 7 tiers of Lost Souls and place each soul in a tier with a small explanation.
