Throwback Thursday is a common theme on sites and blogs where you hearken back to something interesting or random from the past. On Land of Redemption, our current Throwback Thursday trend is re-posts of preview articles from years and sets past.
This is the last of the Priests preview articles. Join us again next week for our transition into Faith of Our Fathers!

With the new rulings going into effect at 4pm on Saturday, July 29, 2006, this card will become enormously powerful. Is your opponent holding Son of God in his hand? Clearly this card was designed to get rid of it. Or is your opponent holding Angel of the Lord? Not anymore! Either of these could be gone, and your opponent is helpless to do anything about it because your discard happens before he can play his dominant. Discarding your opponent’s Son of God is especially hurtful because that renders his New Jerusalem dominant impotent.
Dominants are not the only good targets for this card. Discarding your opponent’s negate enhancement could guarantee that your next enhancement works without a hitch. Or, discarding your opponent’s Authority of Christ, or convert enhancement, or other battle winner could be very beneficial, and could create a successful block all on its own.
Besides all this is the additional benefit of knowing the exact contents of your opponent’s hand. That is useful for your current block as well as your next rescue attempt.
One nice balancing feature of this card is that you only get to do the discarding if it is used by a Sadducee. Before the Priests release, there are only 4 black brigade Sadducees, but High Priest Annas and High Priest Caiaphas – both Sadducees themselves – are reprinted in black brigade in this set, to better work in a Sadducee deck. Also, two new Sadducees are making their debut in the black brigade. If you haven’t caught on, the Sadducess are making themselves comfortable in the Black brigade, and are leaving the gray brigade to the Pharisees.
Another balancing feature of HPP (High Priest’s Plot) is that it can be prevented beforehand, or interrupted/negated after it is played. In fact, its 3/3 numbers will sometimes transfer initiative, making an interrupt/negate a little more likely. Of course, all hopes of a prevent or interrupt are dashed if Judas Iscariot is in play. But who plays Judas Iscariot anyway, right? A 6/6 crimson evil character with no special ability? Or is there a new Judas Iscariot with a special ability?
That brings us to the question of deck construction. Do you run Sadducees in an all-black deck, making use of such evil characters as Simon the Magician and Herod the Great? Or do you pair Sadducees with Pharisees and/or King Menahem, using the Pharisee/Sadducee banding cards and a few of gray brigade’s many hand-discarding cards? That could really hammer your opponent given the new rulings for dominants. Or do you go with a Sadducee/Crimson deck, on the chance that you’ll have Judas in play when it’s time to drop HPP? Or, do you try to combine Sadducess with Pharisees and Judas Iscariot? We’re confident that some of you will get close to creating that perfect defense.
We hope that you enjoy the Priests. It was a ton of fun working together to create this set, and we’re confident that you’ll enjoy megatonnes of fun using them in your decks.
High Priest’s Plot
3/3 black enhancement
If used by a Sadducee, look at one opponent’s hand. Discard one good card in that hand. Cannot be negated if Judas Iscariot is in play.
“Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.” Matthew 26:3-4
